Our Story

Gold Coast Legacy has supported veterans’ families since 1949.

Built on a promise of care, connection and community,
our story is one of compassion, resilience and unwavering support for families across generations.

A promise made after war.
A commitment that continues today.

Since 1949, Gold Coast Legacy has supported veterans’ families through care, connection and community.

A Promise Born from Loss

In the aftermath of World War I, thousands of Australian families were left grieving the loss of loved ones.
Behind the statistics were widows facing uncertain futures and children growing up without a parent.
Those who returned from war made a quiet but powerful promise:
that the families of their fallen comrades would never face life alone.

The Beginning of Legacy

In 1923, Sir John Gellibrand formed a small group in Hobart to support families in need.
Inspired by this act of compassion, Sir Stanley Savige created a similar movement in Melbourne, which became Legacy.
What started as a simple promise grew into a lifelong commitment of care, connection and community.
