Board Members

Our board members are made up of dedicated Legatees
who share a commitment to supporting veterans’ families across the Gold Coast.

James Francis

President
Australian Army veteran with over 40 years of service.

James served in the Australian Army for forty years, mostly in Townsville and Canungra.
He married Robyn, a Physiotherapist from Milla Milla in 2001 and together they have three children, Madeline, Nicholas and Claire. Some career highlights include serving in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan as well as two years posted near Stonehenge in England. James and Robyn once had lunch with the Queen, and although there were 260 other people there, it seemed special to them.
A helicopter crashed in Afghanistan in 2010, killing three Australian soldiers. One of those soldiers left a widow that James knew as a child growing up in Innisfail. It was this connection that drew James down from Tamborine Mountain to the Gold Coast Legacy Club to volunteer. James has been a Legatee since 2011 and currently holds the position of Hon. President.

Greg Pike

Secretary
Former Lieutenant Colonel with over 30 years of military service.

Greg had a distinguished 32-year career in the Australian Army. Rising through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel, Greg served across the eastern states and South Australia, as well as overseas postings in Malaysia, Rhodesia, and the United States. In recognition of his outstanding service and leadership, Greg was awarded the Conspicuous Service Medal in the 2003 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Following his retirement in 2004, Greg transitioned into civilian life, initially working with a Brisbane law firm before taking on a long-term role with the City of Gold Coast, where he spent 17 years in safety and risk management.
Greg has been a Legatee for just over four years and currently serves as Honorary Secretary of Gold Coast Legacy.
He is a proud father of three and grandfather of four. Greg and his partner, Sharon, live in Paradise Point with their much-loved cocker spaniel, Spud.

Jim Gordon

Director
Former Magistrate and Army Legal Corps officer with a distinguished career in law and military service, now proudly supporting veterans’ families through Gold Coast Legacy.

I have been fortunate to live a life rich in experience, especially through my family—my wife Liz, our two sons and their wives and four grandchildren.
My career has been diverse, including roles as a soldier, seminarian, stockman, tax accountant, university tutor and lecturer, barrister, Crown prosecutor and judicial officer. Much of my working life has centred on the law and the military. I served with the Commonwealth Veterans Review Board, later as a senior member, and spent around 20 years with the Australian Army Legal Corps, including deployments on major exercises. In 1993, I was appointed to the Army’s panel of legal consultants.
In 1994, I became a Queensland Magistrate, serving for 14 years and earning a reputation for integrity, independence, and fairness. I was also deputy general counsel to the Criminal Justice Commission and inaugural counsel assisting its Misconduct Tribunal. At my own expense, I contributed internationally, working with the NYPD and FBI on police discipline and undercover protocols.
In 2006, I was appointed to preside over Defence Force Commissions of Inquiry, continuing part-time for six years. Since moving to the Gold Coast in 2017, I have been active with Legacy and served four years as a director. It is a privilege to be a Legatee.

Bob Sayce

Director
Long-serving Legatee with a proud family tradition of military service, dedicated to supporting veterans’ families for nearly 30 years.

Four generations of my family have seen active service in WW I, WW II, South Vietnam and Afghanistan. We were fortunate to return home though some were suffering from wounds and ill health. However, we were motivated to help families who had lost serving members and subsequently deserved and needed support. My father was a Legatee, and I have been a Legatee in four Legacy Clubs for nearly 30 years. Lest We Forget - to honour the fallen and infirm and look after their dependents.

Stephen Firth

Director
Former British and Australian Army Major with 50 years of military service, now supporting veterans’ families through Gold Coast Legacy.

I was born and grew up in the United Kingdom. I joined the British Army as a private soldier in 1965 as a fifteen year old. My career continued until I achieved the rank of Major. I was posted to Australia (Canungra) as the British Army Exchange Officer. Subsequently I transferred to the Australia Army for a further 14 years, making my total service in both armies at 50 years. I had numerous operational deployments in the British Army and in the Australian Army. I saw operational service in Iraq and the Solomon Islands.
I am married to Georgina and have a son and two grandchildren. I joined Gold Coast Legacy in 2015 when I separated from the Australian Army, pursuing a charity which had become close to my heart.
